Case study: A best-in-design pop-up shop

Established by Helen Arvanitakis and Jessica Hatch in 2018, Design Best is a discount retail business working in the premium homeware sector: a concept design store meets discount retail. The pair met while working at British lighting, furniture and accessories company Tom Dixon.

Instead of fixed premises, Design Best are using a pop-up store format to sell heavily-discounted clothing, accessories, lighting and small furniture from high-end and well-known brands, including Tom Dixon, HAY, Anglepoise and Joseph Joseph.

The team’s combined 30-plus years’ experience in creative and retail roles means they know what a successful retail environment looks like. But for their second pop-up store – a Christmas sale shop in Old Truman Brewery off Brick Lane, London – they wanted to make sure that as many of the point of sale (POS) and promotional materials as possible could be re-used or recycled, easily; with the shop open for only five days, they were conscious of the environmental impact of the products they used.

Another former colleague from Tom Dixon suggested they speak to Claire White, Antalis’s Innovation & Creative Consultant for advice about the best materials to use.

The Solution

Claire’s background in visual merchandising, creative design and window design meant she was able to offer expert advice on the most appropriate printable materials for the pop-up store.

After meeting with Design Best to fully understand what they were looking to achieve, Claire specified several printable rigid and flexible substrates from the Antalis Visual Communications range of products to produce the instore POS, leaflets and window graphics:

  • Instore branding and product boards – Xanita
  • A-frames – Smart-X
  • Window graphics – Drytac Viziprint Impress
  • Invitations and flyers – Edixion Offset paper

The Result

Design Best were delighted with the result, commenting:

“Inevitably, working on a short and intensive event is hard work and you often wonder if it will ever come together, but somehow it always does. We opened on time with a great space, and our customers loved the

“Working with Antalis was seamless. Claire recommended the right products for the job, and received beautiful materials that were exactly what we needed. Everything arrived on time and to budget, and was incredibly easy to install. The instore POS really helped our
customers’ retail experience through providing clear pricing, product information and branding. Our window and external signage was show-stopping and our shop could not be missed! On top of this, everything was so simple to take down and recycle, re-use or dispose
