RIP Software – The key part of the digital print puzzle?

print

Ok… So pick the top 3 things you would be looking at when you next decide to go and look for a new printer? Ink type maybe; EcoSolvent? UV? Latex perhaps? How about print & cut or print only? What about print speeds; 20m per hour? 30m? 50m even? All are important features depending on your business, but no matter what type of work you are doing I’d argue that your RIP software should be among the key things you consider when you look at what solution is right for you.

As wide format printers get more versatile, it’s vital that the software you are using keeps pace as if not you’ll struggle to get the best out of your machine – you can put the best engine in your car but unless you have the right gearbox, you’ll never get the power down on to the road!

Most people in the print world tell me that they change their hardware more frequently than they change their software, but few people put the time in to researching which RIP will fit with their workflow best, or give them the features that can improve their productivity. Then there is the often overlooked aspect of which RIP will be the cheapest to keep up to date, but most of all which RIP is the easiest to use.

All of these are things that customers should consider before parting with their hard earned money as todays RIP’s are feature packed: automatic nesting, variable data printing, Pantone colour libraries, tiling modules, auto white & gloss spot colour generators and much more. It’s here that you really can save valuable time and money as it should be as easy and quick as possible to bring in your file, set it up and hit print knowing that what will come out will be what you and your customer are expecting.

But what happens when a new version is launched with new features? You pay the £400 or £500 to upgrade right? Not if you are a Roland VersaWorks customer as we do things a little differently and give our customers the upgrades for free. You also get free firmware updates for your hardware but that is another story!

We’ve recently launched VersaWorks Dual to support our latest SolJet, TrueVIS and VersaUV LEF printers, and as well as all the above features, VersaWorks Dual has both postscript and PDF RIP engines, meaning that whether you are sending a JPEG, TIFF or EPS file, or PDF file with complicated layers and transparencies, VersaWorks Dual outputs everything correctly 1st time.

The combination of printer, ink and RIP – the Roland synergy as we call it – is vital and with VersaWorks, it’s tailor-made to drive all Roland DG printers, meaning that the performance of the printer is optimised; minimal time to set the file up, minimal ink to print the job, and minimal cost to stay up to date with the latest developments.

In a market where time and money are the 2 key things that our customers tell us they need more of, it’s great to know that Roland is helping our customers have a little more of both.
